MERCURY
M.C.C. – Rally Badge Records - October 2006
These
are based on the information available – any further information to
fill in the blanks would be very welcome!
Tam
o’ Shanter Rally.
The
first rally was held in 1979. The first set of badges was a run of
nine ‘Tam O’Shanter’ hat shaped badges, all with a plain black
‘bobble’. The tenth anniversary badge was a large, circular, black
one.

The badge
then changed in 1989 to the one shaped like an arched window, with
the rider going over the bridge. This series continued until 1995,
seven in all, all undated so I can't tell which year is which. Six
of the colours were green, red, pale blue, white, tangerine and
black - I don't know the other one.

In 1996,
the badge reverted to the hat shape, with the 'bobble' now having
'cross-hatching' in it. The 1996 badge was the club's 50th
anniversary one, so was all gold with no enamel.

1998 was the 20th
Tam but I don't know if a 'special' was done for it.

This shape
continued until 2003, so there would be six (one Tam was cancelled
due to foot and mouth), all undated again.

In 2004, it
was the 25th Tam so the hat design was enlarged, and made in pewter
coloured metal, without enamel.

In 2005, the
larger size was kept, and made in mid blue with a white bobble.

In 2006,
with the discovery of a new supplier, and it being the club's 60th
anniversary, the same shape was kept (although reduced in size to
suit the new pricing structure) and produced in white with the
bobble being replaced with the anniversary diamond logo. The date
reappeared on the badge, since the new supplier does not levy a die
charge for doing so.

Tartan
Rally
The
first Tartan was in 1974, and the first set of badges consisted of a
rectangle with a very basic tartan pattern. The first colour is the
main colour, the second is the 'infill' between the raised metal
lines.

1983 Tenth
anniversary - cast pewter medallion
?
In 1984 the
badge changed to a square one with the man in the centre with
coloured bands top and bottom. A date bar was supplied and I think
(not sure) that you could either have the bar only in future years
or a badge too at extra cost. I don't know if a new badge was made
every year.

1985 Bar

1986 Bar red

1993
Twentieth Tartan, special badge.

In 1994,
the badge changed to a small circular one for the next nine rallies.
All undated, I know the colours of seven. I assume either the
'pewter' one or the 'silver' one would be 1998 being the Tartan's
'Silver Anniversary'.
The colours
of the seven are: Silver, pewter, green, yellow, red, mid blue and
orange.

In 2003,
being the 30th Tartan, the badge was redesigned to a very large
circular one with the man in the centre. The colour was the now
famous 'cat poo'

In 2004 and
2005 the same design was used but reduced in size.

In 2006,
with a new supplier (without die charges) and it being the club's
60th anniversary, the badge was done in white with the man holding
the club's diamond anniversary logo. The size was also altered to
fit the new supplier's pricing structure. This badge was undated due
to lack of space!
