PATCHES :
Our Club Patch :
Mercury MCC...
...has always had the mythological figure "Mercury" depicted on our patches and badges. Mercury, in Roman mythology, was the messenger of the gods. The son of the god Jupiter and of Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas.
Mercury was also the god of merchants and of trading and shared many of the attributes of the Greek god "Hermes". The worship of Mercury was introduced into Rome in 495 B.C. when a temple was dedicated to him near the Circus Maximus. His festival, the "Mercuralia", was celebrated on 15th May...
From the Images shown on the right, it's fairly easy to see where the inspiration for the MMCC patch may have come from... We've had recent communication with Howard Currie (now resident in New Zealand) who was a member back in 1965... He has done some work to re-draw the original design (as seen on Bob McIntyre's helmet on the History page), so now we're able to include that here too...
When the original (very "Art Deco" ) design metamorphosed into the current patch is still unknown... But, if you know better, please don't hesitate to contact us...
When it came to celebrate the Club's 50th Anniversary in 1996, the Committee suggested that a new patch be designed to commemorate the event... They met with substantial resistance, until one proposal, that the current design be retained and subtly modified, met with reluctant approval...
The modifications were subtle and also very traditional. Taking the tradition of associating anniversaries with material gifts, the 50th Patch had all the silver threads replaced with gold. The addition of the dates 46 and 96 were all that was required to make the patch complete...
:
So, when the 60th Anniversary came around, it was fairly clear that the Club was still packed full of "Traditionalists" who didn't want to move away from the original design. Having the patch redrawn, using diamante instead of silver, didn't seem quite the image our MCC (yours may be different, friend...) was keen to perpetuate...
So, in order that we embraced the traditions of the past, we retained the Club 's image of Mercury's profile and added the required diamond... It wouldn't quite fit into a regular octagon, so we used an irregular one, giving the result you see below...
:
What we'll do when the next "signature" anniversary (75th) comes around will (I hope!) be someone else's problem...
RALLY BADGES :
Mercury Motorcycle Club...
MERCURY M.C.C. – Rally Badge Records - October 2006
These are based on the information available – any further information to fill in the blanks would be very welcome!
Tam o’ Shanter Rally.
The first rally was held in 1979. The first set of badges was a run of nine ‘Tam O’Shanter’ hat shaped badges, all with a plain black ‘bobble’. The tenth anniversary badge was a large, circular, black one.
1979 - Pale green
1980 - Red (undated)
1981 - Pale blue
1982 - Salmon
1983 - Pale Orange
1984 - Browny-purple
1985- White
1986 - Grey
1987 - Navy
1988 - Big Round Black One
The badge then changed in 1989 to the one shaped like an arched window, with the rider going over the bridge. This series continued until 1995, seven in all, all undated so I can't tell which year is which. The colours were red, black, white, green, yellow, pale blue and navy blue..

In 1996, the badge reverted to the hat shape, with the 'bobble' now having 'cross-hatching' in it. The 1996 badge was the club's 50th anniversary one, so was all gold with no enamel.Tam O Shanter Rally badge from Ted Trett
In addition to the yellow badge there was also a keyring given for 1996.
Photo donated by Stephen Donovan.
1997 Tam O'Shanter badge (missing)
1998 was the 20th Tam but I don't know if this was the 'special' done for it.

This shape continued until 2003, so there would be six (one Tam was cancelled due to foot and mouth), all undated again.
Mid blue with red bobble
Black with red bobble
Red with black bobble
Yellow with black bobble.
Green with green bobble
In 2004, it was the 25th Tam so the hat design was enlarged, and made in pewter coloured metal, without enamel.
2004, pewter, no enamel... Big! (photo missing)
In 2005, the larger size was kept, and made in mid blue with a white bobble.
2005, Blue with white bobble - Big! (photo missing)
In 2006, with the discovery of a new supplier, and it being the club's 60th anniversary, the same shape was kept (although reduced in size to suit the new pricing structure) and produced in white with the bobble being replaced with the anniversary diamond logo. The date reappeared on the badge, since the new supplier does not levy a die charge for doing so.

Tartan Rally :
The first Tartan was in 1974, and the first set of badges consisted of a rectangle with a very basic tartan pattern. The first colour is the main colour, the second is the 'infill' between the raised metal lines.
I don't seem to have a photo of any of the badges below, so if some kind soul would like to donate a picture including the badge release date then I would be very grateful. Thanks.

In 1984 the badge changed to a square one with the man in the centre with coloured bands top and bottom. A date bar was supplied and I think (not sure) that you could either have the bar only in future years or a badge too at extra cost. I don't know if a new badge was made every year.
1984 Badge black, bar black
1985 Bar cream ( as shown above )
1986 Bar red ( as shown above )(possibly red badge above goes with this bar)
1987 Bar pale blue
1988 Bar green + badge green
1989 Bar white (possibly white badge above goes with this bar)
1990 Bar yellow (again)
1991 Badge red (assume red bar available too)
1992 colour not known

Tartan Rally badges from Ted Trett
In 1994, the badge changed to a small circular one for the next nine rallies. All undated, I know the colours of seven. I assume either the 'pewter' one or the 'silver' one would be 1998 being the Tartan's 'Silver Anniversary'.
The colours of the seven are: Silver, pewter, green, yellow, red, mid blue and orange.
In 2003, being the 30th Tartan, the badge was redesigned to a very large circular one with the man in the centre. The colour was the now famous 'cat poo'
2003, 30th Anniversary, Cat Poo-Brown...
In 2004 and 2005 the same design was used but reduced in size.
2004 Green
2005 Yellow
In 2006, with a new supplier (without die charges) and it being the club's 60th anniversary, the badge was done in white with the man holding the club's diamond anniversary logo. The size was also altered to fit the new supplier's pricing structure. This badge was undated due to lack of space!
2006 White
For some reason, when deciding on the designof the badges, it seems that dates are not important, but when it comes to trying to compile the history of the badge, we then find out just how important it is to date them. Maybe common sense will prevail in the future and dates will be put back on the badges. PLEASE !
And information on this badge would be apreciated, because Tartan rally 1996 is the information I have, but this doesn't seem right, because, when looking at the other badges for this period, the design is completely different. ( see above )

Tartan Rally 2010 (Red background) sorry about picture quality. If any one can send me a better copy of the photo, I would be grateful. And also send me copies of the missing badges from 2006 to present day for Tam O' Shanter and Tartan badges. Thanks.
A huge Thanks go to all the people who contibuted information and photos for this page. We would very much welcome any missing photos and information if anyone would be kind enough to donate.
